2010 State of the Union Address

Fellow North Americans,

I know that speeches are President Obama best turf, and he, unsurprisingly, has delievered a very touching one. But, it not only seemed that he still was on campaign, but I had the impression that he subtile attacked the minority at the Congress, aka, the Republicans.

Not enough, he attacked the Supreme Court!

Since I'm Brazilian, I'm used to this kind of attitud (president Lula does it on every single opportunity), but I've never expected to watch in American Politics so soon.

So, I have a few questions:
(a) Does president Obama really look like a Third World Country President, or it's just me?
(b) What would be the consequences at the Supreme Court after this, to say the least, unpolited attacks?
(c) How americans are reacting to this speech?
(d) Was I so mistaken about the US Political environment? and
(e) How were your impression on president Obama address?

Best regards,
Paulo Roberto Sanchotene

Re: 2010 State of the Union Address

I removed my commentary on Obama from the Commentary page because I felt it was too much concerned with current events and said nothing that had not been better said elsewhere. The best places to read conservative reaction to Obama might be National Review Online(http://www.nationalreview.com/)and The Weekly Standard (http://www.weeklystandard.com/).

As to your questions, I would summarize by saying that Obama appears to be incapable of adapting to changed circumstances and if that is true he is finished.  If the Congress changes its majority in November he will no longer be able to enact legislation.  Because of his massive egotism he will then become destructive.  He may even face impeachment.

The three branches of the US Government have always opposed one another.  That is part of the genius of the founding fathers who understood that a Republic could not survive unless its tendencies toward mob rule and tyranny were opposed by checks and balances.  It has worked fairly well.

Franklin Roosevelt tried to overcome the Supreme Court by proposing a law that would add one justice for each justice older than 70.  At that time, if I recall, it would have increased the numbers from 9 to 15. The legislation failed. It was called the "court-packing scheme."  That was in about 1938.

There have been constant struggles.  For instance, a terrible mistake was made almost 100 years ago when the 17th Amendment was adopted, but we have survived that mistake. (That amendment provides that Senators are to be popularly elected instead of appointed by the state legislatures.  It made senators independent of state government so the states lost their direct voice in Washington. The state legislatures were once able to instruct the senators how to vote. Now they vote to make themselves popular.)

Best wishes,

Fritz Wagner
