Professor Hughes is the author or editor of four books, most recently Transcendence and History: The Search for Ultimacy from Ancient Societies to Postmodernity (University of Missouri Press, 2003), and numerous articles.

He is on the boards of the Ernest Becker Foundation and the Lonergan Philosophical Society, and is an advisor to the Voegelin View on-line magazine.
